Rod Building: Picking the Right Handle

Is rod building a challenge? It can be but the main reason rod building can be such a challenge is primarily that you have so many big decisions to make about the different elements of the right fishing rod for your needs. Picking blanks is critical but if you don't spend some time on selecting the best handle for your grip and your cast then you'll end up with a less than perfect finished product.

Let's look at some of the basics of handle selection when it comes to rod building.

Handle Elements

While there are a wide rang of handle materials available, a few are more common than others. You may want to choose something exotic but you'll probably be happy with one of these choices. In some cases, you might even want to select multiple materials because certain elements may be better for one part over another.

With that in mind, there are three main types of handles you might choose from with your rod building

Cork is an excellent choice because it is very lightweight. This is a nice benefit as you probably know because you don't want a heavy material that is going to make casting difficult. Unfortunately, you may have a hard time finding high-quality cork. If you can find cork, another benefit is that it can easily be shaped into the handle of your choice.

If you want something a little heavier, consider rubber cork. It is made of a combination of cork and rubber. The material provides greater durability. Generally, rubber cork is more affordable and easier to find but that may be changing as petroleum costs keep rising.

Another cork-related option is burl cork. Basically, this material is made from a lot of different materials - mainly cork and rubber - in different sizes. If you're interested in the appearance of the finished rod, you might want to choose burl cork because it can be purchased in many colorful varieties. Of course, don't let the appearance be the primary concern of your rod building activities.

Custom or Pre-Formed Handles

Even after you've decided on a material for your rod building, you need to make another critical decision. You can purchase handles that have already been built and that come in a variety of materials, including the three listed above. Pre-formed handles will be easier to get and will make the process of rod building a lot easier. If you take this option, test some handles out before you purchase one online. You'll have more selection available but you'll have a good idea of what you need.

The other option is having a custom built handle. Building the handle from scratch is probably the best choice if you are serious about truly having a piece of custom equipment for your fishing rod. However, there are a number of good reasons not to opt for this choice, including the cost and the time involved but it's definitely something you may want to consider for your own rod building.

Where to buy cheap rod building accessories?

I am making a fly rod but i have a very low budget, i need to get all these things: Cork Handles, Reel Fittings (Seats), Rods Rings and Ferules, for LESS than £15 (ALTOGETHER), can you please tell me the web addresses or shops (in London) where i can buy these?

To be honest unless you know how to build rods and have the tools you may be better for now to go on Ebay and search sporting goods, fishing, Fly fishing, rods and put in a distance you can collect from easily to save postage. You would need to check before you bid that you can collect.
As you do not say rod blank I assume you have got one. I personally go sea fishing but have done so for years and started by stripping down an old rod and rebuilding it.

Can I Really Build My Own Fishing Rod?

"Can I really build my own custom fishing rod?" I'm often asked when I show anglers some of the rods I've built over the years. Some seem to think that special tools are required or that a great deal of skill is required to build fishing rods.

The fact is, even children have been taught to build fishing rods! It is not a complicated procedure nor does it have to be time consuming. And just some of the benefits of building your own rod include:

• Customizing it to fit you instead of just getting a rod off the rack made for the average angler.
• Selecting the components (handle, reel seat, and guides) that you want on your rod.
• The feeling of pride when you hook and land the first fish on a rod you built yourself can't be beat!

The first time you make your own custom built fishing rod, you will probably want to resist the urge to create fancy intricate decorative thread wraps as they can be time consuming with a learning curve involved. However, you will still be able to build something that is both attractive and that you will be proud of.

There are a number of rod handle kits available that are simply epoxied onto the rod blank and these are fantastic for those who don't have the tools or space to make fishing rod handles from 1/2" cork rings. These kits may also include a reel seat, or you can select an individual reel seat yourself.

Guides (sometimes referred to as "eyes" - that the fishing line goes through) are secured to the blank of a fishing rod using nylon thread. A finish that is especially designed to go over thread on fishing rods is then applied.

There are a number of great resources available and many people willing to help you along the way when you decide to build your first custom fishing rod. Why not plan to make a winter project of it? Next spring, you could be catching fish on a rod you've built yourself!

what's the purpose of expensive split grip or split handle bass rods?

They're made like that because the less amount of cork that is on the handle makes the rod itself lighter. And when you're forearm touches the exposed rod blank, it supposedly makes it a lot more sensitive. Same with the exposed blank on the reel seat. I personally like a straight handle with full cork grips.

But honestly? The rod handles are split like that to cut down manufacturing costs.
