Steelhead Fishing on the Muskegon River

Anglers love nothing better than to fight a winter steelhead on Michigan’s Muskegon River in Newaygo. These powerful fish are known as hot chrome torpedoes and can weigh as much as 20 pounds. Just having one on your line is the thrill of a lifetime and most of Michigan’s steelheads are wild steels.

The steelhead migration season begins at the end of October, after the Chinook are finished spawning. Peak months for fishing steelhead are November and December when the fish being their spawning migration. These beauties end the migration near the end of February and into early March.

The best place to fish for chrome torpedoes, the Muskegon River in Newaygo is perfect for fly fishing in early spring and late fall.

Floats and Spawns

If you’re looking for a fast-paced steelhead fishing technique, try fishing floats and spawns. This allows for many hook-ups and a large number of the steelheads will be landed. It’s best to use a longer rod because it gives you a stronger hook-set and a longer drift. Your reel should be a center pin reel that’s been wound with 10 pound test hi-vis line. This will allow for longer casts and smooth drag for your fight with a large steelhead.

When using floats for steelhead in the Muskegon River, they will vary greatly because of water conditions and water levels. The best floats to use for Muskegon River steelheads are Thill orange and black steelhead floats.

Winter Steelhead Fishing

For steelhead fishing in the Muskegon River during November and December, use either a 10’ 8wt fly rod or a 9’6” 8wt fly rod. This allows you to recognize a steelhead pick-up because of the longer drift. Also beneficial is the fact that these longer rods allow for a better presentation, a better mending and they tend to keep your line off of the water’s surface.

Steelhead Flies

The best steelhead flies for use in the Muskegon River is a wide variety of small egg flies. Always use natural colors such as cream, Oregon cheese, steelhead orange and golden.

Steelhead feed in the Muskegon River in fall and are extremely aggressive. They eat almost anything that passes near to them at this time of year. Wooly buggers and egg patterns work best in fall and early winter, as well as wet flies and spey.

If you’re fishing on the Muskegon River in late winter and early spring, use small nymphs and egg patterns with a light leader. This is the time when steelheads are less aggressive. They don’t chase flies like they do in the fall.

In late spring, steelheads become more aggressive, but are particular about what they hit. This is the time to use light leaders and small nymphs. Steelheads enter the Muskegon River for the coming spawn on the gravel runs.

The best way to fish for steelhead on the Muskegon River is by boat. This allows you to reach runs and pools that can’t be accessed by wading, though steelhead can be caught by this method. A good place to wade for steelhead is at the Thornapple Avenue launch in Newaygo, which is not far below the Croton dam.

The mighty Muskegon River provides a great opportunity for steelhead anglers because of the large runs of steelhead found there. If you’re looking for a unique steelhead fishing experience, head for the beautiful Muskegon River in Newaygo. You won’t be sorry.

Fly rods for Bass fishing

The fly rod, the symbol of the sport of fly fishing. A fly rod transfers energy and control from the fisherman through the line to the fly. In order for the proper energy and control to be maintained you must use the proper fly rod for your type of fishing.

Fly rods are rated according to the fly line they will cast and must be properly matched to the fly line and leader for optimal performance and casting.

The graphite fly rod will be our rod material of choice for bass fishing.

All fly rods are rated according to their line weight go from 1wt to 15 wt. In fly fishing we are casting the fly line. The byproduct is the fly at the end of our leader being laid out onto the water. The larger the number the heaver the line weight is. Fly lines are measured in grain weight.

A fly rods specifications are usually indicated on the fly rod. 9 foot 3 ½ oz 6wt. So the fly rod is 9 foot long, weighs 3 ½ oz and is rated to cast a 6wt line.

When looking at fly rods I categorize them like this: Weights 1, 13, 14 and 15 are specialized rods. 2, 3, 4 and 5 weights are light and medium trout rods. Weights 6 and 7 are medium bass and heavier trout rods. Weights 8 and 9 for medium and heavy rivers, large trout, bass and steelhead etc. Weights 9 and 10 for heavy lakes, rivers, canals, muskie, pike etc. Weights 9, 10, 11 and 12, tidal rivers, bays and surf, stripped bass, bluefish, channel bass, drum, shad, weakfish etc.

Fly rods also come in 3 basic actions, slow, medium and fast. A slow rod has a progressive energy transfer and flexes from its tip to its butt. It has slower casting action and is very forgiving in its casting accuracy. It is a good rod for a beginning fly fisher. Although it doesn’t have the power to set hooks in a heavy fish. A medium action rod flexes from its tip to about its half way point. Its casting action is faster and its power is heaver allowing it to set hooks in larger fish for a given rod weight. A fast action rod flexes from its tip to about the first third of its length. It has a faster casting action and allows a harder hook set.

6wt and 7wt medium action fly rods are the most popular fly rods on the market today. Their fishing range gives you the most flexibly in water choices and species to fish. And will cast comfortably form 20 to 40 feet. Regardless of what you hear the typical cast is about 25 feet.

For Bass fishing on a medium lake I like to use a 6wt medium action 8 foot rod. With this setup I can fish flies form size 2 to 16 on 0x to 4x leader. The medium action means I can get a heavy #2 floating mouse fly out to about 25 feet. Flies in the size range 2 - 6 are my choice for Largemouth Bass. Whether floating or sinking. Lots of feathers and lots of hair.

Set this rod up with a 6wt, weight forward floating fly line on a 6wt single action reel with 50 to 100 yards of Dacron backing.

Use a 7 to 9 foot knotless tapered leader 0x or 1x set up with 12 to 16 inches a 0x or a 1x tippet tied to the end.

These are the basics and with this setup you can cast flies in the range of size 2 - 10. Once you hook that first Bass on a fly rod you will be hooked also.

Collecting Fish For Your Aquarium

In the eyes of the non-diving public, the underwater hunter is a guy who walks out of the water with a spear, a mask, a big wide grin, and a big dead fish. To a degree, the picture is an accurate one: certainly big-game hunting has always been and continues to be an important aspect of the sport.

But in recent months there has been an enormous upsurge of interest in small-game hunting for specimens that are caught and kept, and not killed. Not too long ago only a few of the hundreds of aquarists' clubs in the U. S. had one or two divers as members. Today there are several societies composed entirely of diver-aquarists, and several thousand unaffiliated collectors who have found that the aquarium hobby opens up a big and practically virgin territory in the underwater world.

No one has a better opportunity to see and collect exceptional specimens than the skin or scuba diver. In fact divers whose contact with underwater life has sharpened their interest and observation sometimes know more about the subject than land-locked marine biologists; more than one diver has come up with a new species that's totally unknown to the professionals. Anyone who spends his time exploring down under gets an intimate knowledge of submarine life that translates into a head start in learning the arts of the aquarist.

Divers discover through direct observation what environment various species require, what they eat, how they nest and spawn, what kind of cover they like to live in, and so on.

Still, the diver who wants to maintain his underwater acquisitions in an aquarium has a number of new skills to learn. Killing fish is usually easier than collecting them; and collecting them is often easier than keeping them alive. But the result is worth some effort. As trophies go, a well-kept aquarium stocked with beautiful, thriving fish can't begin to be matched by taxidermy's best.

Where, What and How to Collect

Anywhere there's water there's life, and much of it can be transplanted to the aquarium environment with great success. Actually, the limitations are more often set by preconceptions than by nature. To the average aquarist, the only fish that seem appropriate for life in a glass tank are fresh-water topicals. Period.

The skin-diver is just as likely to think in terms of a few marine species only. Both frames of reference are unnecessarily narrow. Good aquarium fish can be found in most of the coastal areas of the U. S., and even the inland waters contain interesting and beautiful candidates for the home set-up.

There are a few factors to consider before you start bagging tenants for a tank. Most species that swim out in the open do relatively poorly in restricted aquarium surroundings, and should generally be avoided. Choose varieties that swim close to the bottom, in the protective cover of kelp or coral, or in and around submerged objects.

Consider also the fish's size. Really big or even fairly big species are unsuitable, of course, but young examples of medium-sized species are sometimes more appropriate than they may seem: aquarium life has the effect of stunting growth, because fish tend not to outgrow their environment.

The equipment used to collect fish can be as simple as a wide-necked glass jar or a small hand net. Best of the latter is a long-handled butterfly net made of nylon marquisette or mosquito netting, and held still in the water so that it flows out with the current.

When fish swim into it (which they're more likely to do if there's some crushed-shellfish bait nearby), the trap is locked by turning the handle 90 degrees. Another tool is the slurp gun, which consists of a piece of metal or plastic tubing about two feet long and with a 1 1/2-inch bore, with a tire-pump rod and plunger added to provide vacuum and suction.

fishing rod building question?

Can silk thread be used to wrap the guides on a fly rod or should I just stick with nylon? Is polyester OK?

if it is silk rod wrapping thread, fine. it was traditionally used on fine split bamboo rods. now l guess everyone is using nylon. sewing thread is too rough and has lots of small bits sticking out.
l would NOT use the NCP winding thread on a fly rod. l would also not use color preserver. they look much nicer and professional with a translucent finish. and DON'T use anything larger than size A.
file the ends of the feet of the guides thin to give a smooth, even wrap. and a screwdriver shaft to lightly burnish the threads and smooth the wraps. 2 or 3 color preserved wraps on the ends of the wraps in a contrasting color will finish it off nicely.
you may be a pro already, and if so, apologies for telling you how to do your job.

It doesn't matter if you don't have a clue of what we are talking about right now. We're prepared to give you all the guidance that you are going to need for your rod-building project. Incidentally, this is a great winter project. It keeps the excitement alive of what's in store for you in the upcoming season.

The important thing to remember is to take your time and enjoy your project. Take each step and complete it before moving onto the next. There are several types of fishing rods to choose from but for fly fishing specifically, the rods are longer, thinner and more flexible. One reason why fly rods are meant to weigh light is because rods made like this are the only ones that can cast even the lightest fly. So, you have to realize that the overall characteristic of a fly rod should be lightweight. Also for casting, the line used works together with the weight of the rod, the weight of the line acts as a helper to how the rod is able to cast the fly.

Next, the material of a fly rod varies too. Most of the rods today are made of composite materials such as carbon and graphite, carbon and boron or fiberglass materials; a more innovative version compared to the original bamboo split material. As for the sizes, you have choices between the #0 sizes to the #16 ones. You’ll have to decide first what size of species you want to catch, the type of water condition where you’ll be fishing, the wind and of course the weight of the line before selecting the the type of rod.

The #0 rods are usually used for the smallest species from freshwater, while the #16 rods are for larger ones on saltwater seas. Also, in selecting the type of rod you want to use for fly fishing, familiarize first the parts of it because unlike other types of rod, fly rods don’t have the usual handle extending just right below the reel although there are rods that have very little handle too. The reason for this is to prevent from any casting interference.

These are the primary qualities you may want to take note of before getting yourself the fly rod you want. Don’t forget to make sure, above all else, that you are comfortable with the type of rod you will be using. Don’t get the extremely long rod if you can't even handle it yourself.
