]]> Once upon a time, fly fishing was viewed as a manly sport. This could be due in the part to the old elitist status of this sport. The nostalgia too, tends to be in favor of the masculine involvement about fly fishing. Today, fly fishing is appropriately recognized to be a great fishing sport option for both men and women. Essentially, estimates say that there are almost over a million women today, who participate in fly fishing. A few estimates say that women account for about 15-20% of the modern fly fishers.

More interestingly, the initial book about fly fishing, which was ever published, was written by Dame Juliana Berners. She published the book "A Treatyse of Fysshynge wyth an Angle" in the 1496. She is reported being a noblewoman and a nun. Berners certainly would have tied and also fished her artificial flies. Currently, there are such equally influential women who have involved in the environs of fly fishing.

There is a huge and growing market which caters to fly fishing dedicated to women. Few outfitters are dedicated about teaching women how to fly fish. Some outfitters have reported that women, who participate in classes of fly fishing, routinely outnumber the men. Many fishing clubs for ladies are becoming very popular, especially around common fly fishing areas.

Extreme physical strength is essentially not required in case of fish flying. Fly fishing is often more about the speed, style and finesse. Women usually do very well when they fly fish.

Fly fishing groups and clubs provide camaraderie and social networking opportunities. Women and men both enjoy such benefits. Along with the start of the women-only fishing groups and clubs quite many women have found a home with the fly fishing activity.

Manufacturers have also recognized the significant increase about the participation by women. Ladies now buy waders which are essentially designed for them, rather than relying upon the men's' sizes they earlier looked out for. Fly fishing rods too, are being designed keeping women's fly fishing in mind. Women's fly rods are made to be considerably lighter and have much smaller handles. Such improvements are great pieces of news for every woman who enjoys the sport of fly fishing.

Fly-fishing is an ancient angling method especially effective in catching trout and salmon. This distinct method of angling uses artificial flies to lure or excite fish. Fly-fishing helps anglers catch the fish easier than the traditional way.

There are two basic forms of fly-fishing, dry flies and wet flies.

Dry flies need coating with floatant in order for it to sit in the surface of the water. Dry flies are mostly effective in upstream and moving water. Dry flies help anglers' spot where fish resides like pools and pocket in streams. Thus, it is easier to detect them and catch the fish.

The use of wet flies is beneath the surface of the water. Wet flies are nymphs, lures and true wet flies. It works as effective as dry flies except that in cases where weeds are many and almost touching the surface, wet flies blends with the weeds and thus may not be as effective as the dry flies.

Fly-fishing was developed in the 19th century, dry fly technique is very effective especially for slower and clearer rivers.

This is because weeds in rich rivers tend to grow closer to the surface, thus traditional wet fly fishing is almost ineffective. Dry fly fishing is thus useful by keeping the fly and the line floating on the surface. This makes fish excited and aggressive; the angler can then spot the location of the fish and in turn catches fish easier.

Later developments of fly-fishing made this concept as basis, thus in the latter part of the 19th century, anglers develop love for fly-fishing. This gave birth to fly-fishing, the sport among its aficionados.

Various parts of the United States host fly-fishing sports such as in the waters of Catskill Mountains of New York and the provinces of Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, British Columbia, Alberta and California.

Anglers in North America also develop various literatures pertaining to fly-fishing. The sport of fly-fishing and all these literatures gave North America the reputation of being the birthplace of dry fly-fishing, specifically the City of Calgary, Alberta. It is arguably one of the world's best trout rivers, thus it remains to be the epicenter for the Western Fly Fishing in North America.

Various other states in America keeps the growing number of fly-fishers such as Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Arkansas. The growing number of anglers that are drawn to the sport of fly-fishing keeps the popularity at its peak.

Dry or wet fly-fishing, whichever is more effective in the rivers where you fish will help keep the sport exciting. It may not be long that other countries will learn to love the sport and make it a globally loved sport.

How does fly-fishing work?

Fly fishing uses longer and lighter rods; sizes vary from 2m (6 ft) for fresh water and up to 4m (14 ft) for salt water fly-fishing. Weight for fresh water rods are between two to five ounces.

Popular types of casts in fly-fishing follow its variety in situation specifics. Anglers uses common cast when the angler whisks the fly rod forward and back using his forearm and upper arm, the wrist is used to soften the motion.

The rod movement varies from 10 o'clock position to 2 o'clock position without touching the ground. Anglers do this to load the rod tip with energy and to travel the fly line creating distance and control; they call this motion false casting.

False casting needs to be done to excite the fish or make it aggressive enough so that when the fly touches the surface, it will be sure that the area where the fly touches is where most of the fish are located and thus will be easier to spot and catch them.

Bass fishing has a fascinating history. It started in the late 18th century and continues to progress even today. Fishing was originally practiced in

search of food among the people in the south of the United States. Since then, it has encompassed all ages and nations. Today, countries such as

Australia, Cuba, South Africa, The United States and most of Europe participate in this kind of event.

Timelines

• The year 1768 or 1770 represents the birth of bass fishing sports.

• William Shakespeare Jr. materializes the production of a level wind device and secured its patent on 1897.

• The William J. Jamison Co introduced the overly ornamented Shannon Twin Spinner in 1915 and was improved to create today’s spinner baits.

• In 1932, President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted the creation of The Tennessee Valley Authority and encouraged the creation and building of

numerous dams. These dams were later used as fisheries for different species of bass.

• Five years later, DuPont Company filed patent for a nylon fishing net, this was later developed into nylon monofilament fishing line. Still in use

today. With some changes it stays straight and lasts quite a long time with cleaning and care.

• In the year 1992 Larry Nixon, the famous fisherman in the history of bass fishing won $1M total earnings for this sport on this year. Today we have

bass tournaments all over the US and winnings of $100,000 to $1,000,000 are common.

Types of Bass Fish

Several fish species that are being caught in bass fishing are:

• Micropterus psalmodies (Lacepede) - Largemouth Bass

• Micropterus dolomieui - Smallmouth bass

• Micropterus punctatus - Kentucky Bass

Just a note of reference, Australian Bass are different from the above North American Bass variants although most share similar features. Perhaps, the most

robust success of Bass Fishing was in the 1950s. Due to the development of modern fishing equipment, from bass boats, rods, lines, lures and various fishing

gears.

Electronic gear was incorporated among the host of equipment bass fishers used at that time. Reels of different types, which function in hauling and

hoisting, were also created. Statistics show that the audience base of this sport is increasing and that more and more people are getting interested in it

compared to tennis and golf.

Fly fishing for bass is a popular sport as well.

A good fiberglass or bamboo rod is required and comes in various sizes. The most used size is a 9 foot rod. The rod is longer than normal rods because the

rod is used to cast the heavier line.Rods will come in one, two or three piece units. Many fishermen prefer a two piece rod as it is easier to transport.

The type of fly line you use will depend on the rod you select. Look on the rod handle for the type of line to use with this rod. The reel of a fly rod is

very different than a spin casting rod and will hold less line. This is because the line is much thicker. With a spin rod the lure is pulling the line but

with a fly rod the line is pulling the lure.Most bass fly fishers will want to use a Up-Locking with extension butt type rod. Your fishing store will know

what your asking for.

Another important item for the fly fisher is a good fishing vest.You want as many pockets as you can get and large enough to hold your lure boxes and other

items. Also make sure there is a felt or wool fly holder to stick extra fly lures to. This makes it easy to change lures when needed.

Chest or hip waders are also a good idea when bass fly fishing. You will be able to wade the river and streams and get right on a bass while in the water.

Remember bass like to hide and strike their prey.

A good pair of wading shoes or boot will help too. Find some with good soles of leather, felt or non slippery texture. I used to use rubber soled boots but

they were slippery on moss covered rocks in West Virginia, I now have felt glued to the bottoms and find this works well.

When bass fly fishing do not be worried about not catching any bass, it maybe trout time...So fish for trout. They are fun to catch and just as tasty. Get

FLY FISHING: what is the best balanced rod> reel> line> combination?

eg SAGE TCR 9 FT ORVIS REEL CORTLAND LINE

I go fishing on a 25 sq acre lake for rainbow trout. I find constant casting abit tedious so I am looking for a rod that is powerful and easy to cast with. Will be grateful for any advice..

e.b I currently have all the tackle except a rod.Last one broke after a fight with a fly caught on a ankor rope I am basically looking for something that is easy to cast and that cast long distances with a straight leader. I would like somebody to suggest the perfect balance/combo that will be a good allrounder for every condition...eg windy etc. I do mainly lake fishing off a boat. I hear the sharkskin lines are awesome so I might invest in one. Thanks for your answers.

A helpful answer requires more information from you.

Tackle is selected according to the fishing conditions. You say you're fishing a small lake for trout but give no other information. Is it windy? Do you fish from shore, boat, or tube? Are you typically fishing midges and the like...or do you fish streamers & leeches? How far out do you find yourself needing to cast/fish? Are you fishing a floating, sinking, or sink-tip line?

And about the casting...what specifically do you find difficult? Do you truly believe a different rod is what you need...or are you somewhat limited by your current casting ability? You mention "constant casting," which is something that doesn't typically happen when fly fishing for trout in stillwaters. Fishing midges, leeches, and streamers (the three most common forage imitations for stillwater trout) is a slow, methodical game. You shouldn't be casting constantly.

I'm not trying to be difficult with you, rather just trying to help.

As for rods, what are you currently using? If your current rod is a bit stout for you, you could be getting fatigued and frustrated. If it's a bit undergunned for the fishing conditions, you can tire out as well. Is it possible your current rod is worthy, but you'd do well to go with a different line? If it's a "good" rod (nice taper/materials/construction in an suitable length/weight) you'd be amazed the difference a new line of slightly different configuration can make. Cheap, poorly designed rods always cast like clubs (or noodles), though; the best lines in existence make little difference.

There is no magic bullet for tackle selection. Finding the perfect outfit is a quest. You can throw all your money at it, but that doesn't guarantee results...or perfection. Take your time, find somewhere to test cast some possibilites, and don't be duped by ads or marketing lines. FYI, the TCR has merit in the right hands in unlikely conditions, but it's not what most guys would describe as a great or enjoyable fishing tool.

This Under Utilized Technique May be One of the Most Successful: Trolling Fly Lines

This under rated trolling technique may be one of the most successful…

If there is one technique that not many people consider when heading to the lake it’s trolling fly lines and it can produce some of the best fishing imaginable. This technique hasn’t had a real chance to prove itself as fly fishermen don’t do it often because a lot of the joy comes from casting and using finesse to persuade the fish to bite. If they’re going to troll why not just break out the spinning or bait-casting gear. On the other side of the coin, non-fly fishermen tend to be intimidated by fly rods and think that it’s both expensive and difficult to learn. Truth be told you can get a fly rod for a very reasonable price these days and it’s actually fairly simple to pick up the basics with minimal practice. More expensive gear and different casting techniques comes with experience, but for this technique you don’t need either. You don’t even need to know how to cast!

There are a wide variety of fish you can target with this method. It is a great technique for all trout species, even early and late season lake trout. But also bass, walleye, pike and pretty much anything else that swims in under 25ft. of water can be fished this way. For me, this is the single most consistent method for catching still water trout.

Go get yourself a fly rod and as I said it doesn’t have to be an expensive outfit though there are certain advantages to things like multiplier, or large arbour reels, as the retrieve ratio is greater and you will be able to gain line quicker on a fish running toward the boat. A standard 9 ft. rod is perfect; anywhere from a 5 weight to a 7 weight are ideal in most situations, but if you’re looking for bigger fish go with a heavier weight; lighter for smaller fish. Personally I like to use a 7 weight because it has enough backbone to work a variety of baits. There is a wide variety of line on the market and the body of water you’re fishing should dictate what “type” to use. There are six types of full sink line: type 1 – type 6. Type 1 runs the shallowest and type 6 the deepest. I use type 6 almost exclusively as it can get down faster and you can effectively fish around the 18 – 22 ft range with a lot of baits. An electric motor and fish finder are certainly advantageous as trout can be easily spooked and it can be crucial to know your depth so you can work your lines along the bottom structure properly. Bring along a good selection of flies such as shrimp and streamer patterns. It’s always a good idea to check with the local tackle shops to see what’s working. Lures like flatfish, quikfish, hot shots and rapalas are excellent choices to bring as long as they don’t have much dive to them and have high action while trolling dead slow. Pick up some fluorocarbon leader material. Leaders in the 9 – 12 ft range are best. I usually use Berkley Vanish and if I’m using something other than a fly, which I usually do, always tie a swivel into the leader or you will have quite the mess on your hands.

“Ripping” flies is one of the most consistent techniques for picking up active fish. Make a nice long fluorocarbon leader, no need for a swivel down to your fly, all on your type 6 sinking line. Don’t be afraid to use big flies! My best fly has always been a double shrimp pattern on a #2 hook. The key to ripping is exactly what it sounds like. Let your line out until the backing, keeping the trolling speed a little higher than what you might be used to and repetitively jerk the rod as hard as you can. The more power the better! This is another benefit of the heavier 7 weight rod; it makes this motion a lot easier on the arms. Essentially, this will make your fly almost swim through the water like a jerk bait and you get a lot of impulse strikes.

If you want to switch to hardware make sure you check the action of your lure at the side of the boat before you lower your line so you know how to gauge the speed for your troll. For example, flatfish are designed to have a lot of action at a very slow rate of speed, so by trolling dead slow you achieve the perfect action which you will notice on your rod tip, and be able to get deeper than lures that require faster action. So, when you want to get to some deeper fish with your type 6 line troll dead slow with a flatfish, kwikfish, or hot shots and you can effectively fish close to the 20 ft mark.

Getting used to the way the lines follow the boat is very important if you want to work an area properly. Let your line out to the backing if you’re fishing deeper than 12 – 15 ft. Fly lines have much greater water resistance than standard line and due to the thicker diameter it won’t cut the water like monofilament. For example, when you make a fairly sharp turn with fly line it will swing more with your turn and follow the path of the boat instead of cut across water and thus stalling your lure. This allows you to work your bait more effectively. When you get used to fishing this way you can estimate your depth and where behind the boat your fly, or lure, is running to within a few feet. Boat control is absolutely crucial when working deeper structure and you can actually work the lines to ride right up a drop off or sink down, whatever the case may be. So, if you’re trolling in 20’ feet of water and you see that the bottom is rising, all you have to do is gradually speed up so your line is elevated by water resistance caused by the speed of the boat. The reverse is also true when you come to a drop off; slow right down and let the line sink with the bottom and speed back up when your line is deep enough. This will put more fish in your boat and you’ll find a lot fun out of concentrating on the bottom and trying to work it properly. Some of my bigger fish have been caught while stalling on a drop off to let the lines sink, then as soon as you kick into gear hold on!

Even though this is not a popular technique it is not due to its lack of productivity. The only reason is that people never think to do it. There are so many different situations where you can apply this technique. I’ve had enormous success fishing for bass, walleye and pike with crankbaits and flies. Another great place to give this a shot is salmon fishing on the west coast. I’ve done very well fishing for coho, pink and sockeye salmon on a third rod out the back in between my downriggers. One of the biggest things to learn in fishing is to be versatile if you want to be consistently successful. Give this technique a shot and I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Roadside Cafes For Owner Drivers

After a hard day of courier work on the road, there is little as rewarding as seeing the turning up ahead for your favourite roadside café. But when you're carrying out courier jobs in unfamiliar territory it can be hard to tell which roadside joints are worth making a pit-stop for. Here is a list of what we feel are some of the best:

#5 - The Quarry Café

Located near to the junction of the A487 and A489, this vegan café is affiliated with the nearby Centre for Alternative Technology and eating here is an excellent way of off-setting your carbon footprint whilst carrying out your courier work. This café serves delicious wholemeal pizzas and veggie burgers and the fact that it has been around for over 28 years is a testament to the quality of the food.

#4 - Haldon Grill

Known by locals as 'The Grill on the Hill' this eatery, owned by Andy and Lisa Harvey, gives a friendly West-Country twist to the typical old-school American diner. The joint is not only frequented by those travelling long-distance on their courier jobs, but also by walkers in the area exploring the Haldon Ridge. The grill specialises in hearty cuisine and offers a range of meals from chicken curry, cottage pie, vegetable bakes and lasagne. However, it is Lisa's home-cooked gooey flapjacks that have earned the diner its legendary status.

#3 - The Red Bus Café

The Red Bus Café is a famous sight on the A64 Leeds -York road and is parked on the lay-by opposite The Flying Horse Farm. Although the bus was once a secret amongst courier workers in the business it was soon descended on by the masses once word got out amongst travellers en-route to the Leeds Festival. The bacon and egg sandwiches served from the bus are according to food critics 'the best in the world' and the dishes offer excellent value for money.

#2 - The Ace Café

This roadside jaunt is popular with owner drivers in the London area, and certainly those with a love of all things Americana. If you work as a courier there's a good chance that you love all forms of transport and in a nod to the days of the T-birds and Ton up Boys the café has a large collection of motors and motorcycles. If you're lucky enough to have a self-employed courier job in this area on the first Wednesday of the month, then you may chance upon the famous Hot Rod Night with live music and free entry.

#1 - The Little Chef at Popham Services

As an owner driver you've probably visited more Little Chefs than you can shake a stick at, but rest assured that this joint located en-route to Winchester is distinctly different. Culinary Magician, Heston Blumenthal took over this café in an attempt to change the brand image of the Little Chef and, as you can imagine from a man that invented snail porridge and fluorescent green absinthe jelly, he's put the fun back into pit-stops. The braised ox cheeks cooked in red wine for three days are a definite must try as is the green tea trifle sprinkled with popping candy.

pokemon platinum team query?

Hi guys,

I am buying the pokemon platinum game on friday and was looking some advice on a good pokemon team. I don't understand the implications of a pokemon's nature, but if someone could give me advice on particular natures to go for with these 6 pokemon (and good hold items) that I'm thinking of catching, it would be greatly appreciated....

Snover - Ice/Grass
Staryu/Starmie - Water/Psychic
Chimchar - Fire/Fighting
Gible - Dragon/Ground
Drifloon - Ghost/Flying
Magnemite/Magnezone - Electric/Steel

What do you guys think?

I just realised that I cannot catch a staryu as I planned to do until I get a super-rod which is after fighting the elite four. Could I get it in pokemon pearl and transfer it to platinum or do a need a national dex first?

The pokemon's nature gives you a 10% increase in a certain stat and a 10% decline simultaneously in the same pokemon but of a different stat. Let's say I had a Weavile. The Weavile is Jolly natured. This means that I get a 10% increase in my Weavile's speed stat and a 10% decrease in my Weavile's Special attack stat. Natures are crucial in the competititve battling stage of Pokemon. The right nature can determine whether that pokemon wins or loses.

Now regarding your team. Magnemite/zone covers Gible. Chimchar also covers Gible from Ice and grass types. Gible can switch in on Starmie/ryu and Drifloon if either feels threatened by an electric attack. Drifloon and Magnezone can cover any psychic or ground types that threaten Chimchar. It looks very all around from my perspective. Smogon.com doesn't do movesets for NFE's which make little cup battlers suffer.

The best I can do is give you some useful movesets for your starmie and magnezone.

Also You can't transfer key items via pal park. You need to beat the elite four and talk to a fisherman in the fight area in order to get the super rod. Here's a hint, you can fish for staryu with the super rod in Canalave and Sunnyshore City.

Mercedes and Racing

History in Racing:

Mercedes Benz originated in 1880 by two men Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. Since its origin, they were famous for their fast and sporty cars. Early in the 1890s, an Austrian car dealer Emil Jellinek entered the Mercedes in car races and often won.

Mercedes introduced its first racing car 'Simplex' in early in 1900s, with its innovative design the simplex dominated the racing industry for years.

They won their first major race in 1914, the French Grand Prix. In 1920, the company manufactured the 'Tropfenwagen', which made them unbeatable in all races for a decade.

They set a record speed of 270 miles per hour in 1930 with its elite race driver Renneilter Alfred Neubauer.

Mercedes entered Formula One racing in 1954 and finished 1 and 2 in the race.

The Setback:

In 1955, Mercedes took retirement from racing, after a tragedy of a car crash killed close to 80 spectators in a Le Mans race, 'A 300 SLR smashed into another car and went flying into the stands.' This devastating incident forced them into retirement from racing industry.

Best Comeback Ever:

It was late 1980s, Mercedes returned to sports car racing in style. They introduced their new compact car, the W201 190 class, which broke 3 world records. The 16-valve engine ran a race of 50,000 kilometers at Narudo high-speed track in Italy for 201 hours at a top speed of 247 kilometers per hour.

Mercedes used a loophole in the specification of the race and built an engine that could be used only for this one race. This was in 1994 at Indianapolis 500. They introduced the concept of push rod engines to the racing world.
In 1993, Mercedes entered Formula One racing as an engine supplier of the F1 team of Sauber.

A New Alliance:

Mercedes joined hands with McLaren in 1997, formed a F1 team of its own, and was labelled as Team McLaren Mercedes. They signed up David Coulthard as their driver, who went on to win the first races of 1997. This was the first success for them after that of Juan Manuel Fangio's in 1955. McLaren Mercedes went on to win for three consecutive years. In 2005, Mercedes won 10 out of 19 races.

Status:

McLaren Mercedes has proven to be one of the best teams in history of Formula One racing. They have the best and most efficient team, from the drivers to the technicians. The drivers such as, Lewis Hamilton and Gary Paffet are one of the best drivers in the racing world. The management includes big names such as, Ron Dennis and Martin Whitemarsh. The technical team includes geniuses such as, Jonathan Neale, Paddy Lowe and Neil Oatley. Lewis Hamilton is the star on the team. He finished third in his first race for Mercedes. He broke a 40-year record of podium position at the start of his first season. Lewis got nine-podium position in his first nine races. In 2007, he won four races and finished second for the champion, losing by just one point to Kimi Raikkonen of Ferrari.
