Understanding the Label of Fishing Reels

Before you start comparison shopping for fishing reels, you might want to learn a little bit of the industry jargon so you can understand all of the terminology you'll find on those boxes. If you're new to fishing or if you've never really tried your hand at buying fishing reels before, then you'll probably feel like you're lost in a world of strange terms that may or may not be important clues about the quality of the purchase you may or may not be making.

Don't worry though. That's a natural reaction to what you'll see on the box. Now let's try to understand the basics of the box so you can start searching for the best fishing reels possible.

Bearing Amount in Fishing Reels

One of the main numbers you'll see on the side of the box and one that you should pay attention to is the number of bearings. The bearings contribute to the smoothness of the reel. The general, although not universal, rule is that a larger number of bearings are going to give you less resistance when you're turning the reel and that will make fishing a lot easier and less strenuous for you. However, sometimes other factors can enter the picture and cause fishing reels with fewer bearings to be just as smooth as or smoother than ones with more bearings.

While those numbers can act as a guide, the only real way to know the smoothness of your fishing reels is by testing them yourself. Only when you have them in your hand and can feel them in action will you know for sure. That's why you should do plenty of tests with other fisher's rods before you make decisions and start buying.

Fishing Reels & Line Capacity

The line capacity number is meant to tell you how much line can be held by the fishing reels. However, this usually isn't consistent for all lines. Different sizes of line can change the basic numbers. If you see a line capacity such as 10/(155) that means if you're using a 10 pound line you'll be able to hold about 155 yards of line.

Gear Ratios and Fishing Reels

This number is probably not going to mean much to you but understanding its meaning may help give you an idea of which fishing reels you're more partial to after some hands-on testing. Basically, these ratios tell you how many revolutions the spool or line winder is going to make each time you turn the handle on the reel. Obviously, the more turns it makes the less cranking you have to do and the easier your job is going to be overall.

When you're reading the ratio, the first two numbers represent the number of revolutions. The last number is almost always going to be a 1 which stands for the one time you have to turn the handle.

Important Tips for Using Trout Fishing Reels That Are Sure to Increase Your Success!

Your fishing reel can be a critical part of your success as a trout angler.  It is so important for getting your line in the best locations and turning a bite into an actual catch.  Since having a functioning reel and knowing how to use it is so important, I want to briefly discuss some trout fishing reel tips for enhancing your experience on the water and ultimately for catching more fish.  Let's talk about a few of these tips now.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when selecting the best reel is its weight and size.  Many people think that you always have to have a large reel with a lot of action, but this just simply is not true.  In fact, there are several occasions when you want the exact opposite of that.  If you are fishing for Brook Trout or other small trout species, especially if you are fishing in a creek or small stream, then you don't need a big reel.  You would generally want to go with a light rod in this scenario, and it is absolutely imperative that the weight of the reel matches the weight of the rod.  On the contrary, if you are fishing in a big open water lake for trophy lake trout, or if you on a big river with strong current, then you will definitely need a heavier reel.  A strong, heavy rod is ideal for these conditions too because it allows you to deal with bigger fish and stronger currents.  Just remember, try as best you can to match the reel and rod weights, and if you do this then you'll be fine!

Another great thing to think about when it comes to trout fishing reels is making sure they are working properly and maintained well.  This is obviously not a problem if you are looking to purchase a reel or have just recently purchased one, but if you have had your reel for a little while then it's a really good idea to make sure functions smoothly before going out to the water.  If it isn't spinning properly or is tight for some reason then you may come home from the river empty handed.  You can have the best lure on the river and be in the perfect fishing hole, but if you're reel is sticking then you're definitely in trouble.  This may seem obvious to you, but I have many friends that have gotten themselves in trouble out on the water because they didn't take good care of their reel during the offseason.

A third tip to be mindful of for having more trout fishing success is to change your line at least a few times throughout the season.  This is very important, but many anglers do not change their lines very often.  The problem with not changing out your line frequently is that older fishing lines cause more friction and resistance, so this can be damaging to your reel.  You may have to crank harder for older lines, especially if they are monofilament lines, and if you are trying to crank too hard and fast then it will put too much stress on the reel.  Changing your line is a simple way to keep your fishing outfit in good shape and make things easier on yourself.

I want to share with you one of my favorite largemouth bass fishing tips. I have been fishing for many years and when I learned this proven technique it made all the difference in my bass fishing results. I consider myself mostly a fly fisherman and I primarily go after trout. But I live in an area where there are far more lakes and ponds full of bass and the nearest good trout streams require a bit of a drive. I had always wanted to catch more largemouth bass. One day I was talking to my friend Joe and he shared his favorite largemouth bass fishing tip with me and from then on I started catching bass like crazy.

Many people had be telling me to use purple or blue rubber worms (sometimes referred to plastic worms). I had been using them but with little success. My buddy suggested these for bait but it was the way I was fishing them that made all the difference. I had used various types of weights and even bought some pre-rigged worms with dual hooks, Still no luck. This was not the way to go.

What I learned was a variation of the Carolina rig. I generally use Gamakatsu offset shank worm hooks in size 2 or 3 and 6 to 7.5 worms. My favorite are two tone Culprits. Take the point of the hook and stick it straight into the head end of the rubber worm. Slid it down about three quarters of an inch and then out the side. Now slide the hook down to where the eyelet is the only part exposed at the head. Take the point of the hook stick it into the side of the worm and have it almost coming out the other side. You want it to be in the bait so you can fish it in a weedless fashion. When a fish bites and you set the hook the point becomes exposed and hooks the fish.

You want to fish this with no weight or swivel of any kind. Just tie your line to the hook. Be sure to trim it so there is no tag line hanging off. Even with no weight you will cast fine. I usually use 6 or 8 pound test line. Cast to a fishy looking spot, let it site briefly and retrieve slowly.

Now almost all my bass angling is with this largemouth bass fishing tip and I catch tons of fish. Do not be afraid to cast into vegetation such as lily pads and other weeds. Fish love cover so that is where they will be hiding. Since you are rigged to be weedless you will seldom have a problem but you will often catch bass!

Fly Fishing Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

In North America fishing anglers are thought to be the first to have used artificial flies for bass. Developed after fly patterns for trout and salmon fishing, patterns were adapted into specific flies for brass. Anglers fishing for brass developed the popper fly, which is still used today. Many early anglers developed new fly patterns and wrote about the sport, increasing the popularity of fly fishing in the United States as a whole. Fly Fishing peaked in the 1920's in the northeast and Midwestern United States.

Fly fishing tackle has evolved over the years as well. Lines were made of silk or horse hair. They were light enough to use with a long fly fishing rod allowing the wind to do most of the work. With the introduction of new woods such as greenheart and bamboo, it was possible to cast files into the wind on silk lines. American rod builders developed techniques for making bamboo rods. Thin stripes were cut and glued together to make a light, strong rod with a solid core, that was better than anything that proceeded them. In the 1950's the development of fiberglass rods, synthetic fly lines and monofilament leaders revived the popularity of fly fishing in the United States.

Fly fishing reels were improved as well. From the mechanically simple, a storage place for your fly fishing line and backing to the more advance models of today. In order to tire the fish, anglers simply applied hand pressure to the rim of the spool, called palming the rim. Many modern reels still use this design with a clicking mechanism which makes both a noise and provides light spool braking to prevent overruns. Today fly reels are available in many different brands from Crystal River, Cortland, Scientific Angler and Super fly just to mention a few. Fly fishing rods are available from Hurricane Redbone, Cortland, Cahill, and more. Combos are available from Okuma, Super Fly, Crystal River and more.

Many different techniques are used in fly fishing. Fly fishing for trout is a very popular sport, and can be done using any technique and any general type of flies. Many of the techniques were first adapted from fishing for trout. There is a misconception that fly fishing for trout is done on the surface with dry flies. Trout feeds below the surface majority of the time and usually come to the surface only when there is a large bug hatch. The only exceptions are during the summer months and on smaller mountain streams.

Fishing in cold water. In order to deceive wary trout or reach deep runs of salmon anglers sometime need to wade into the current. Anglers will need sure footing and insulation from the cold water. Hip waders for shallow waters or chest waders for deeper water are best. The two main types are one piece boot foot waders or stocking foot waders that require wading shoes or boots.

Saltwater fly fishing is done with heavier tackle, both to handle the larger, more powerful fish and to cast larger heavier flies. Wet flies that look like bait fish, crabs, or poppers are used. Species caught include bonefish, redfish or red drum, tuna, striped brass, salmon and marlin. Offshore species are usually attracted to the boat by chumming with small baitfish and trolling back and forth in a large area.
