Fly-Fishing Rods - Wondering Why They Are So Long?

Why is the fly fishing rod so long?  If you are a novice who is looking to buy his first fly fishing rod then the length of a fly fishing rod compared to a typical fishing pole is very noticeable.  For the beginner this extra length may be cumbersome since they might try casting the rod as they would a typical fishing pole, or they might feel that a long rod may not be a good idea.  However, there is a very good reason for the length of the fly fishing rod and why anglers should not be bothered by the length.  Let’s take a look at why the fly fishing rod is longer so that you can make the best decision when shopping for your rod.

Longer Rods Mean More Accurate Casting Over Short Distances

Firstly, when casting from a fly fishing rod, you are aiming for a target that is 10-15 feet away from you.  Casting from a typical fishing pole is very different because you are aiming to get the bait as far away as possible.  You want your bait to land 40 or 50 feet away or even more.  However when fly fishing the distance is substantially shorter so you need your cast to be very accurate.  This is where the length of the fly fishing rod is vital.

Flies Are Light and More Difficult to Position Accurately than Weighed Bait

In fly fishing, the weight of the fly is next to nothing but the line is heavy.  So when casting, the line needs to direct the fly to the designated target.  In a typical fishing rod, the hook is weighted by the bait and sinkers.  So when casting from a typical pole, the line is being pulled by the hook.  Therefore in an ordinary fishing pole, the lure or bait pull the line, but in a fly fishing rod, the line is the one pulling the fly behind it.  Since it is hard to control how the line moves, the length of the rod aids the line and directs it to the targeted spot.

When casting a line with a fly fishing rod, the rod will guide the line and the momentum the tossing creates pushes or snaps the line at a certain length.  This is where your fly will land.  So the longer rod will be easier to direct to the spot where you want your fly to be.

How Long is Long?

So a good rod  for fly fishing is somewhere between 9 to 10 feet.  This length may seem intimidating or awkward for newbies, however a long fly fishing rod means more control and direction to your casting, so never underestimate the length of your fly fishing rod.  It is hard to play golf with a hockey stick, or basketball with a football.  So even when fly fishing, the right fly fishing rod is a very important piece of equipment.  So consider the factors before picking up that new fly fishing rod.

When it comes to bass fishing, owning the best bass fishing gear can help elevate your bass fishing game to a whole higher level. You may not be able to master all the bass fishing skills necessary for you to be able to become an exceptional bass angler, getting the right bass fishing gear for the job will most definitely make a big difference in your chances of catching bass.

Bass fishing tackle is actually your main weapon of choice. Every tackle is actually comprised of different parts, all of which are actually just working together as one system. One of the very first things that a beginning bass angler should do is pick the right bass fishing rods for his needs. Not all beginner bass anglers know exactly how to do it. Here are some tips on how you can pick the best bass fishing rod for your bass fishing needs.

Bait casting Or Spinning Rod?
The very first thing that you need to determine is make a decision as to whether you are going for a bait casting rod or a spinning rod. This is important because your ability to fish for certain types of bass, and on certain areas, will depend a lot on what type of bass fishing rod you have. This is so because you actually need to use a different type of rod for when you choose to catch a big-sized fish, as compared to a rod that you would use when you want to catch a smaller-sized fish. There are also a lot of other factors that would be affected depending on which type of bass fishing rod you would choose to use, such as the size and type of rod you would be able to use, and the particular spot on where you can effectively fish for bass.

Bait casting Reel:
Once you have determined which type of rod you would want to use, you now need to pick a particular type of reel for your tackle. Bear in mind that since your tackle is a combination of different working parts, then simply choosing the rod won't be enough, but it is definitely the start. If you choose to use a bait casting rod, then it would be a great idea to use a bait casting reel. This particular type of reel actually poses a lot of difficulty for most bass anglers in trying to cast it successfully, mainly because of the revolving spool that this particular type of reel has. Casting it the wrong way could get you to backlash on your casting attempt.

Spinning Reel:
If you choose a spinning rod, then a spinning reel is probably one of the best choices of reel for you. As the name implies, when you cast using a spinning reel, the pickup bail basically revolves around a fixed spool that is attached to a housing device as the handle of the tackle is turned. Since the spool revolves up and down around the housing device, the line is distributed evenly from the reel, reducing the chances of back lashing and bird nesting.

Rod Length, Sensitivity And Strength:
Another factor about the rods that could affect how you use it and what you use it for has something to do with the length of the rods, its sensitivity and strength. If you plan on using the rod for taking on a larger-sized bass fish, then you might want to use a rod that has a medium to high power so that you can handle the bass fish with relative ease. If plan on using a lure that requires a fairly sensitive line, then you should probably pick a rod that is high on sensitivity with a stiff tip.

Kind Of Bait:
The kind of bait you intend to use will also have an influence on the type of fishing rod that you want to use. Since there are a lot of different kinds of lures available in the market today, buying a general purpose rod might just be the solution. If you really want to be more specific on the type of handling and performance that you want your rod to be able to do, then choose a more technique specific rod.

Price:
One of the more important things that you should not forget is the prices of the bass fishing rods you are considering. If you do not have the money to purchase a rod that you want, simply opt to buy the next best thing, as long as it is within your price range.

Buying A Fishing Rod For The Optimal Fishing Experience

A fishing rod is one of the most important tools used to catch fish. Catching fish is deemed as relaxing, invigorating and good eating by many. Many fishermen are very competitive and are looking to catch a particular type of fish. Having the right tool can make your fishing trip much more successful. The size of the fishing rod can greatly depend on the size of fish that you want to catch. Before purchasing a fishing rod you will want to determine the type of fishing that you will be doing. The size of the fish, method of fishing and water conditions all make a huge difference. Knowing ahead of time the type of fish that will be biting can assist you in the decision of purchasing a fishing rod.

Using a fly fishing rod is best suited for catching trout or salmon. In order to catch them you will need a flexible fishing rod. Having the correct fishing rod, line, nets and other tools can ensure that you bring in the fish that you desire. Remember that with salmon fishing you will be holding the rod so make sure that you have a comfortable grip. Many salmon rods are a bit more expensive, but well worth the price when you bring in that prized salmon.

.

If winter fishing is your desire there are ice fishing rods that can be used in frozen lake conditions. These rods allow you to fish from holes in the frozen water. The ice fishing rod is generally of good quality and a bit more durable than other types of rods. The length of the ice rod can vary between 24 and 36 inches in length. You may need to experiment a bit to determine the best fit for you. Everyone is different so it is impossible to say that one-rod or the other is right for everyone.

When you want to do coarse fishing, a carbon fiber rod is the method normally used to catch any member of cyprinid family. That is why it's good for you to know what type of fish that will be biting before hitting the water. Other types of rods are spin casting rods, spinning rod, ultra light rods, and surf rods. These are fishing rods designed for specific types of fishing and much of the decision depends on what you are most comfortable with. Another determining factor is what kind of fish that you are looking to catch. Before purchasing a fishing rod make sure to ask yourself the following questions. What type of rod should I use? What type of fish will I be fishing for? How much do I want to spend? These are also questions that you can discuss with a fishing pro or sales person before making your final decision.

Introducing Shimano Rods - A Brand of Fishing Rods You Can Trust!

What is a fishing rod?

Of all the forms of fishing tackle, a fishing rod is perhaps the most popular variant in recreational fishing. It essentially consists of a long, flexible pole with a reel attached to the handle of the pole. The reel stores the fishing line and an arrangement is provided to allow the line to be cast and retrieved. In the olden days fishing rods were mainly made out of wood. These days they are mostly made out of synthetic materials such as fiberglass or graphite composites. Wooden poles such as those made of Tonkin bamboo, Calcutta reed, or ash wood are still popular in some circles of fishing.

The main difference between modern day fishing rods and those of yore is that modern day fishing rods are precision engineered models designed for snag-free operation. Great research has gone into developing fishing rods that maximize the experience of fishing. Fishing: How to Choose the Right Fishing Rod

There are many ways to catch fish. A fisherman can surely catch fish with his hands. He can catch fish with a spear. He could even cast a net over a school of fish, however awkward it may be at first. All of these methods can be effective with practice but they offer the same disadvantage to the fisherman: the catch is restricted to only shallow water varieties of fish.

On the other hand, many believe that it is the fishing rod that is the fisherman's most basic, most important weapon. With a fishing rod, your chances of getting a good catch are very much improved.

When it comes to game fishing, that is, fishing for large, offshore fish, a fishing rod is a necessity. You just can't do without it.

If you're new at fishing, a fishing rod will be your main investment. It is the one, essential tool that makes most fishing possible and enjoyable. Oftentimes, just manipulating a fishing rod can become addictive for many people.

Here are some guidelines that will help you select the right fishing rod for your needs.

▪ Shape. A fishing rod should taper off from its base to its tip. You won't have problems with finding a fishing rod that satisfies this shape. It's quite widespread, practically universal. Advanced designs are introduced to the market every now and then, but the classic and traditional is still the best and finest choice.

▪ Weight. A fishing rod is described by weight. This weight doesn't refer to the actual heaviness of the rod. Rather, this refers to how resilient the rod will be for specific types of lures and for specific types of fish. Therefore, classifications like Ultra-Light, Light, Medium-Light, Medium, Medium-Heavy, Heavy, and Ultra-Heavy are used when describing fishing rods or fishing poles to help the fisherman in choosing the correct one for his objectives.

Fly fishing, for instance, can be managed with Ultra-Light to Medium weight rods. Bass fishing, on the other hand, would require Medium-Light to Heavy weight rods.

▪ Action. A fishing rod is also described by action. Action refers to how much the fishing rod can bend when pulled by a particular force, and how fast it will revert to its neutral position when the force is removed. Action is categorized as slow, medium or fast, although middle-points between levels can be found.

▪ One-piece or Two-piece. Some fishing rods are labeled as one-piece, because they come in, well, one piece. They are said to feel very natural for the fisherman, allowing for a more comfortable and relaxing time.

On the other hand, two-piece fishing rods are, of course, more complicated. But with the proper engineering, these rods can achieve their goals effectively well. However, you'll need to take special care when selecting a two-piece rod. If it's ineptly manufactured, it could be disastrous even for experienced fishermen.

When the time comes for you to choose a fishing rod, you really need to know about the fish you intend to catch. Some fish take a few minutes to catch, while others can take many long hours. Knowing this will dictate what kind of fishing rod you'll need. There'll be no room for guesswork and you'll have the best fishing rod possible. Good luck!

Answer by bosoxnolan
To answer your first question, a Shakespeare Ugly Stik rod will handle anything you can possibly throw at it. Available in many different weights/lengths, it is one of the strongest, least expensive rods on the market.

It is called a spinning rod because it goes with a spinning, or open-faced reel. The spool and bail spin, taking up line.
