To do this, you must try out the rod. Does it fit your hand? Do you feel comfortable when you cast, or are you feeling some strain in your arm or back muscles?

Another factor is the "whip" in a rod. If the rod is so flexible that you think you're holding a whip rather than a handle, walk away—quickly. You can't set the hook with a rod with that much bend. Of course, you don't want a rod that's too stiff either. This is why you'll see people in the fishing department shaking their rods. They're testing the "whip".

Stick with Quality

Once you find a quality brand that you like, stick with that brand. For example, if you like the five foot rod from the Quantum Teton series, you'll like the six foot six inch one, too. It's that easy.

All about Rod and Reels

When you talk about the action of the rod you are talking about the amount of bend it has. The bend is most noticeable when you are casting your line or reeling in a fish.

Slow Action Rod - This rod will bend all the way down to the handle.
Moderate Action Rod - This one bends over the last portion of the rod.
Moderate-Fast Action Rod - These will bend just over the last third portion of the rod.
Fast Action Rod - The fast action rod bends in the last fourth part of the rod.
Extra-Fast Action Rod - This rod will only bend at the tip.

The bend affects the way you fish because the softer or slow action rods give more. In other words, they have more flexibility. These will hardly ever sling your bait from the hook but they will not cast as far as the fast action rods will. The fast action rods will cast further because they put more force behind your throw giving you a little added power.

Fly Fishing Is A Unique Experience

Fly-fishing is a form fishing that uses a different method of catching the species that live and breathe under water. The method is referred to as angling. This method is used to target mostly trout and salmon. Recently the target list has extended to fish like bass, pike and carp. Historically fly fishing an ancient method of catching fish that originated in Scotland and Northern Europe.

There are many and various types of flies being used in fly-fishing. In modern fishing methods there are various types of fish being used to catch the designated target. The following is a list of types of fish; dry flies and emergers (for example midges or stoneflies), nymphs (for example mayflies or eggs and worms), streamers wet flies (for example buggers and leeches), saltwater flies (for examples sailfish and marlin), bass and panfish flies (for example crawfish and eels), salmon and steelhead flies (for example Atlantic salmon flies).

Certain gear is needed when fly-fishing. The first item on the list is fly rods, in which size and usage is important. It is important to match the fly rod with the fly line according to weight. Matching the weight of the two items is important to have positive casting results. The size of the fly rods can be anywhere from #0, #1, #2 and are used for the lightest trout and panfish rods up to powerful and heavy #16 rods for the largest saltwater game fish.

Another item needed for fly-fishing is a bamboo split cane. This allows for a better performance in the freshwater trout fishing situations. Synthetic fly rods are usually used and offer a greater versatility, stiffness, power and performance than a bamboo split cane. The advantages are that they are less expensive and require less maintenance. Finally, fly reels are manually operated. Although in recent years, more advanced models have been developed to deal bigger fish and more demanding situations. These models increase the drag and retrieval performance.

Fly-fishing is an ancient method of catching fish. It is more demanding because you are limited to the types of fish you can catch. You need the appropriate gear to catch the trout or the salmon. Today's modern techniques used in fly-fishing have been developed to meet more challenging situations, such as bigger weight of the fish. These modern advancements prepare the fly fisherman to successfully meet his quota by using the methodology appropriately.

There are many popular locations for fly-fishing mostly in the Northern United States and Canada. Alaska is another popular place for the activity. Some places in the United States are Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Montana and California are just a few places.

Helping to Keep Your Home Safe

Most home insurance claims are for accidental damage but each year a good number of us will suffer a burglary. This is a particularly unpleasant experience as a stranger has broken into your home, rifled through all your possessions and then walked off with the most expensive items.

Fortunately, there are ways of minimising your chances of being burgled.

You are at risk even though you may not own any expensive items. Don't forget that a burglar doesn't really know what you have until they have broken into your home. Radios, CDs, DVDs are all things a burglar would gladly take away to sell. Sure they would prefer nice expensive jewellery but once they are in your home they will take anything they can sell on.

So what can you do to reduce the chances of a burglary?

Most burglars are opportunistic and look for open windows and doors for a quick way into a property. Always, always close and lock doors and windows when you leave the property, even if it's for just a few minutes. Ensure the locks you have are adequate and change them if they are not secure enough.

Try to set up some lights and lamps on timers so they click on and off during the hours of darkness. Having bright lighting outside your property which is trigged by PIR sensors can also be effective, particularly at the front.

One simple mistake people make is to leave house keys and car keys within easy reach of the front door and the letterbox. Thieves will make light work of 'hooking' these through the letterbox will either a stick or even a fishing rod. They can now get into your home and steal your car. Never put your address on any set of keys.

Don't leave spare keys outside where a burglar could find them, entrust them to a neighbour for safekeeping but do not put your name and address on the key fob.

Install a good quality burglar alarm and use it. Many people forget to turn on their burglar alarms, you've paid for it so use it at every opportunity even if you're just popping out to the shops. Just the site of a burglar alarm will deter all but the most persistent of thieves.

Mark your goods. You could either buy an engraving pen or an ultra-violet pen to mark your goods. Put your surname and postcode on them so Police can trace the owner of any recovered stolen goods. It is also possible to store the serial numbers of all electrical items on a secure database that the Police can search on when stolen goods are recovered.

Make sure your home insurance policy is of good quality and that all your contents and possessions are covered. Policies provide different levels of cover so check what you have and upgrade or add extra cover if needed.

Check to see if you have a local neighbourhood watch scheme and join it along with your neighbours to help protect your local environment.
