Fly fishing is a sport that has been around for hundreds of years but nobody really knew about it until the last couple of centuries when it gained popularity in Britain and in the United States. The earliest writings of fly fishing that have been found so far are dated around the second century AD. After that there is a gap of roughly thirteen hundred years as the next fly fishing writings that we know about were published in the late 1400s. After those writings were published, the sport lost notoriety until the nineteenth century when the British elite fell in love with the sport. In the late 1800s, fly fishing became very popular in Britain and it quickly became the sport of choice among the British upper class and well-to-do society members. It wasn?t long before very elite fly fishing clubs were formed. These clubs were small and honored the traditional methods of fly fishing. They were appalled by the American practices of fly fishing which involved all members of society no matter what their social ranking and also involved the attempt to improve upon the traditional methods of the sport. The American fly fishers are famous for constructing new rods, new line and new reels.

The best way to learn how to fly fish is to find yourself a good fly fishing guide as this is a sport that is not easily learned from books. It is better to go out to the water with your fly fishing guide and have him or her teach you the basics of casting, reeling and landing your fish.

Basically to fly fish you have to know how to cast. If you don't know how to cast, you will need to find a fly fishing guide who can show you how because you just can't learn how to cast from the written word. There are two types of casts you will want your fly fishing guide to teach you: the "C" cast and the "J" cast.

In the event that you can't find a good fly fishing guide, there are lots of fishing courses available that you can take. A quick search through the internet will locate a fly fishing class in your local area. Once you learn how to fly fish, you can be a fly fishing guide for others. The sport is incredibly popular and growing by the day.

The sport of fly fishing has been around for years and years. In medieval times, anglers fished for food, but the sport has evolved over the years to become a real test of skills. Anyone who has become involved in the sport of fly fishing knows how addictive in can be - but in a very good way!

Fly fishing is markedly different from regular fishing. With plain fishing, you use lures and often live bait to bring fish to your line and hook them. When you are fly fishing, you use a fly that resembles a real insect that the fish feed on naturally. The line is longer and you mimic the movement of the fly or insect on top of the water so that the fish thinks they are biting at a real insect.

Casting is constant in fly fishing. You put the fly out in the water and then draw it back several times so that the fish thinks the fly is landing on the water and then taking off again. With regular fishing, you cast your line and let it rest until the fish bites making the bobber sink into the water.

You can catch some pretty hefty fish using either method, but when you are fly fishing, you have the opportunity to "battle" the fish for survival. This can be extremely satisfying as man battles nature for the top position.

Flies are made out of natural materials in fly fishing while regular fishing utilizes latex and plastic lures made out of man-made materials. Many avid fly fishermen say that the fish are much more attracted to the natural lure rather than the man-made ones. This, they say, makes fly fishing an amazingly satisfying sport.

You can fish just about anywhere - a local pond, a lake, or even a reservoir. When you are fly fishing, you will want to go where the fish are most plentiful. That means traveling (perhaps) to rivers and streams where fish like trout and walleye are known to live. The challenge in fly fishing lies in making the fly look real to the fish below water.

Fly fishing in remote places like Alaska and Canada are great vacation getaways. You can plan a fly fishing trip to many different spots including Mexico, South America, and even Russia. That can be a great adventure - much more so than just fishing your local lake or pond.

River Fly Fishing

A quiet morning, a small moving stream and the fish are biting. If this sounds like something you dream about, you are a fly fisherman at heart. So for those of you that are new to the sport, here is a little fly fishing guide to get you started. Even some of you fly fishing gurus might be able to get a little brush up here!

Fly fishing is alot more then just casting a line and wishing for the best. Many other things must be taken into account, i.e....the fly rod, the fly line, the fly reel, casting, and finally the tackle needed. I hope to cover all of this here in a very short amount of time for you.

The rod: Fly fishing rods come rated like 3-weight or 5-weight. All that means is that the rod will effectively cast that size line. Now this is not a scientific fact, but a 5-weight rod casts 5-weight line better than any other. In discussing fly fishing for beginners, a little experimentation is in order.

A trip to a fly shop will be good for that purpose, but you are going to see another aspect of the rod called "action". "Action" determines how soon the rod begins to bend. This is important to lure presentation as well as in certain conditions.

The line: There are many types of fly fishing line. All of them are designated by letters like "DT" (double taper) or "WFF" (weight forward floating), "WFS" (weight forward sinking) and a few others. Each has it's own applications.

For the most part, a DT or WF line is recommended by most fly fishing guides. Again, with fly fishing for beginners, the line is the most crucial part of your gear. A good line will cast well on the worst pole ever made.

The reel: This element can mean the difference between landing the fish of your dreams or watching your prize fish swim back into the depths from where it came.

Reels can cost anywhere from around to thousands of dollars. The most important part of the reel? A good drag system that is adjustable. Without a drag system on the reel, you run the risk of running the reel out of line and damage can occur.

As a fly fishing guide line, get yourself a decent reel and load it with some GOOD line to match the rod.

Casting: Fly fishing for beginners wouldn't be complete without a word or two on casting. Start by moving the rod back and forth. The cast has two parts; the back cast and the front cast. On the back cast, the line will travel behind you. Then on the front cast, the line will unroll and travel out in front of you.

Practice this front/back casting and watch the line as it travels. Keep the line in a large "C" shape. When you have this down, start to tighten the shape into a "J" shape. This is THE method for fly fishing for beginners and is taught by many fly fishing guides as it is the main cast used in fly fishing.

Flys: This is the most important factor in fly fishing. If you are familiar with the water you are fishing then load up with flies that resemble the natural insects there.

On new rivers or lakes try match the flies you are using to any kind that seems to be on or in the water. Then match that as closely as possible from your fly arsenal.

It is always a good idea to research the water you are going to fish before you fish it, however this is not always possible so sometimes it is best to match the fly to the insects you see around you or ask a local where possible.

Going Fly Fishing Is A Very Spectacular Way To Spend Your Time

A nice thing to do in your spare time is fishing. Angling is the method of fishing that most of us know from watching television. Angling requires a fishing line that is normally attached to a fishing rod. A fish hook or an "angle" is then attached to this fishing line. A fishing reel may or may not be incorporated to the fishing rod. The reel is what you use to retrieve or pay out the line.

There are many types of angling. Fly fishing is one type of angling and it has distinct characteristics. In fly fishing, you use a special fishing line and rod. The idea behind fly fishing is to catch fish by using artificial flies, which are cast with a fly rod and a fly line. You can do fly fishing either in fresh water or in salt water.

Fishing in general, and fly fishing in particular, is a good way to spend your time for many reasons. First, no other sport or hobby can be as relaxing as fly fishing. It is hard to relax while doing other sports like basketball, football or even chess. In contrast, it is very therapeutic to watch the beautiful sun set while waiting for the fish to jump onto the line.

Fly Fishing Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow

In North America fishing anglers are thought to be the first to have used artificial flies for bass. Developed after fly patterns for trout and salmon fishing, patterns were adapted into specific flies for brass. Anglers fishing for brass developed the popper fly, which is still used today. Many early anglers developed new fly patterns and wrote about the sport, increasing the popularity of fly fishing in the United States as a whole. Fly Fishing peaked in the 1920's in the northeast and Midwestern United States.

Fly fishing tackle has evolved over the years as well. Lines were made of silk or horse hair. They were light enough to use with a long fly fishing rod allowing the wind to do most of the work. With the introduction of new woods such as greenheart and bamboo, it was possible to cast files into the wind on silk lines. American rod builders developed techniques for making bamboo rods. Thin stripes were cut and glued together to make a light, strong rod with a solid core, that was better than anything that proceeded them. In the 1950's the development of fiberglass rods, synthetic fly lines and monofilament leaders revived the popularity of fly fishing in the United States.

Fly fishing reels were improved as well. From the mechanically simple, a storage place for your fly fishing line and backing to the more advance models of today. In order to tire the fish, anglers simply applied hand pressure to the rim of the spool, called palming the rim. Many modern reels still use this design with a clicking mechanism which makes both a noise and provides light spool braking to prevent overruns. Today fly reels are available in many different brands from Crystal River, Cortland, Scientific Angler and Super fly just to mention a few. Fly fishing rods are available from Hurricane Redbone, Cortland, Cahill, and more. Combos are available from Okuma, Super Fly, Crystal River and more.

Many different techniques are used in fly fishing. Fly fishing for trout is a very popular sport, and can be done using any technique and any general type of flies. Many of the techniques were first adapted from fishing for trout. There is a misconception that fly fishing for trout is done on the surface with dry flies. Trout feeds below the surface majority of the time and usually come to the surface only when there is a large bug hatch. The only exceptions are during the summer months and on smaller mountain streams.

Fishing in cold water. In order to deceive wary trout or reach deep runs of salmon anglers sometime need to wade into the current. Anglers will need sure footing and insulation from the cold water. Hip waders for shallow waters or chest waders for deeper water are best. The two main types are one piece boot foot waders or stocking foot waders that require wading shoes or boots.

Saltwater fly fishing is done with heavier tackle, both to handle the larger, more powerful fish and to cast larger heavier flies. Wet flies that look like bait fish, crabs, or poppers are used. Species caught include bonefish, redfish or red drum, tuna, striped brass, salmon and marlin. Offshore species are usually attracted to the boat by chumming with small baitfish and trolling back and forth in a large area.
