Choosing The Right Fly Fishing Equipment

Fly-fishing has gained a great popularity over the years as a calming sport. The excitement of luring the fish, catching it and having it for lunch or dinner or even simply the soothing sounds of running water in a beautiful scenic stream have made fly fishing quite an experience to remember, for the young and the old alike. However, to really enjoy the sport, you need to have the right kind of equipments.

Now, when it comes to the purchasing of the right type of fly-fishing equipment, it has someow become a challenge. However, it adds to the fly-fishing experience package and therefore worth the extra effort it takes to procure the best of fly-fishing equipment and with a little practice and the right type of fishing gear, fly-fishing can be a very relaxing and enjoyable sport.

Now let us have the short list of what to look for in the market to have your fly fishing equipment intact for the show.

First on the list is the rod. This is what allows the fly or lure to be delivered to the correct point in the water to allow the fish to be subdued quickly. Traditionally, the rod used is an 8'6 split cane. Fly fishing rods were originally made from flexible but sturdy wood but then later on, bamboo rods were introduced and these became the standard fly-fishing equipment since then. Bamboo was treated and reinforced to make the best quality fly fishing rods out of it. Currently, advanced technology has made fly-fishing rods from carbon fiber or fiberglass. The fly fishing rod is similar to a normal fishing rod, only that it is a little  heavier because the weight factor gives a clean and smooth cast to the fishing pole. The smoothness of the cast can vary from pole to pole. A sturdy and heavy fishing pole is an essential part of fly-fishing equipment.

Second is the reel.  The reels used in fly-fishing are bigger and heavier in comparison to the normal fishing reel and they have a distinctive design that are much more durable compared to the normal fishing poles. Fly fishing rods and reels work together and one must consider their compatibility to each other at the time of purchase so you have to make sure that they have to work smoothly together.

Now for the third component of the fly-fishing equipment, you need to have a replicated fly. These flies are designed to lure the fish with specific types of flies for particular species of fish. Hence, the most important aspect of fly-fishing is to consider what type of fish you want to catch so that you can also decide what fly to choose. Choosing the right kind of fly is the most important aspect of fly-fishing equipment because this will determine your successful catch.

You can have other accessories for your equipment, like the floatant and the sinkant which will both help you in the process of catching the fish. Floatant will of course make the flies float in water. On the other hand, the sinkant will make sure that last 12 inches or so of tippet do not sit proud on the water's surface and frighten fish. By using sinkant the tippet sits in the surface layer and becomes invisible. Whatever equipment you choose to go with your fly fishing experience, you need to choose the best of the equipment to ensure your success in the fishing arena.

What Are The Most Useful Fly Fishing Magazines?

There are a bewildering number of fly fishing magazines on the market today. Of course, the presence of numerous fine publications is indicative of a popular and fast-growing sport that we call fly fishing. There are more than 40 magazines that devote themselves to some facet of fly fishing. These fly fishing magazines can be anything from a tiny regional focus, to a global phenomena. The problem, obviously, is that none of us have enough hours in the day to spend on studying forty different publications. Consequently, this article was composed to assist the busy angler in their choosing of the best fly fishing magazines.

Fly Fishing Magazines Choice Number One: American Angler

The American Angler is probably the most well-known of all the fishing publications. They generally have articles compiled by well-known specialists plus they cover virtually each and every area of the planet. They are not necessarily a fly fishing only mag, but instead they cover every sort of fishing experience. Nor do they specialize on a single species of fish, but instead they cover the whole spectrum. An active angler can't go wrong by choosing this magazine as one of their options of reading material.

Fly Fishing Magazines Choice Number Two: Fly Fishermen

Fly Fisherman magazine is much more targeted towards the fly fishing experience, as you might expect. However, they are wide in their range in that they focus on topics that concern fresh water as well as deep sea fly fishing. They also are known for successfully discussing casting and other presentation methods.

Fly Fishing Magazines Choice Number Three: Gray's Sporting Journal

This particular publication goes beyond the fundamental how-to directions and instead delves in to stories concerning the individuals who participate in sports. It's definitely targeted for the light-hearted market, and does a very effective job of entertaining its clientele. I find this periodical as a good alternative to the other, more serious magazines that get into the minutia of fishing.

Fly Fishing Magazines Choice Number Four: Fly Fishing and Tying Journal

Talk about the minutia of fly fishing! This magazine deep dives into practically any and all topics regarding fly fishing anglers. Particularly they are known for their color photography and drawings that demonstrate to the reader the way to tie flies, how to attach leaders, the way to perform better casts, along with other subjects of that nature.

Fly Fishing Magazines Choice Number Five: the Regionals

As mentioned previously, you will find lots of magazines designed with the regional angler in mind. Such publications as the Canadian Fly Fisher, Fly Fishing in America, Alaska Fly Fishing, and Fly Fishing UK, are all examples of high quality local magazines. If you are planning a road trip, and would love to learn a little more about the local environment, then there's most likely a regional publication that may help you in your fishing excursion.

Conclusion:

In this day and age there is definitely an overpowering amount of information on almost any subject, including fly fishing. It will behoove the savvy angler to avail themselves of any and all info that can help them to catch more fish. We hope that this brief article on fly fishing magazines will help you to better appreciate your fishing experience.

How to Select A Suitable Fly Fishing Rod

Fly Fishing is a unique form of fishing that is as artistic in nature as it is technical. Fly fishing has evolved from being a sombre pastime to an extremely passionate sport among anglers. Fly fishing, initially developed for catching trout and salmon, quickly developed into a favorite recreational habit for many around the world looking to take a sabbatical from the rigors of daily life.

Unlike traditional forms of fishing, fly fishing involves the use of an artificial fly as bait. The fly is tied to a hook with the use of fur, thread, feathers and other similar materials. The basic logic behind this is to create an illusion of food that attracts the fish to the hook.

There are two major fly fishing forms, one being the traditional dry fly fishing and the other wet fly fishing. Out of these, dry fly fishing is widely regarded as the classic form in which the angler casts the bait upstream to catch trout or salmon. The sight of a fish jumping upstream in anticipation of bait beats most other fishing experiences hands down and this is just one the many reasons why more and more people are attracted to the charms of fly fishing.

Fly fishing is generally regarded to be one of the toughest forms of the fishing sport and demands a lot of patience and skill from the fly fisherman. As fly-fishing fun requires agility and sharpness, the correct selection of fly fishing rods holds utmost importance. There are many different types of fly fishing rods around the market and one should always pick out an appropriate fly fishing rod after review of certain aspects such as their weight, length, and the place where fly fishing is to be attempted.

One of the best ways for a fly fishing amateur to kick start things is to try out his luck using a bamboo fly fishing rod. Most fly fisherman swear by them due to their lightweight and greater flexibility. Bamboo fly fishing rods were the first fly fishing rods to be created and their immense flexibility makes them an asset to both amateur fly fishers and astute fly fishers who prefer a much more refined style of fly fishing. However on the down side, bamboo fly fishing rods are much more delicate and as making them requires substantial skill, they are pretty heavy on the wallet too.

Great alternatives for bamboo fishing rods are graphite fly fishing rods and fiberglass fly fishing rods. Graphite rods do tend to be a bit on the stiffer side but their additional strength, performance, and durability does indeed give fly fisherman a lot of options to work with. On the other hand, fiberglass fishing rods have grown in stature and number over the past decade or so and are now the most common fly fishing rods around the fly fishing community. Fiberglass rods are strong and also have the added advantage of being flexible and durable. However, they do tend to be a bit on the heavier side and much of their usage is dependent on the strength and the skill of the fisherman wielding them.

The act of fly fishing is best enjoyed in the company of friends and relatives. Fly fishing offers the best way to spend a dull afternoon in the lap of nature with close friends and relatives complete with competition to make the biggest catch. So, go ahead and take a dip into the charm of fly fishing and find a great way to enjoy your much cherished weekends.

Fly fishing rods are not the only type of rod that needs careful selection criteria. For more on all types of fishing rods, be sure to visit http://www.anglingrods.com today.

Fly Fishing for beginners

Fly Fishing is fast becoming a popular sport all over the world and it is a relaxing, and very rewarding sport fishing in many different ways. When reading this article you will get basic information and knowledge about fly fishing.

It has always been a lot of mystery surrounding fly fishing. Many fishermen are afraid to try this rewarding sport fishing because they have been told how difficult it is to learn.

Sure fly fishing is an art. But fly fishing is really not that hard! It requires some training, but everyone can learn fly fishing. Once you master the technique, you will experience some amazing fishing trips.

Fly fishing is a specialist approach to fishing. Fly fishing is different from bait casting or spin casting because fly fishing uses a weighted line to carry the nearly weightless bait forward when casting. Traditional fishing tackle is designed to have a nearly weightless line carried by weighted bait on the end.

Casting is definitely the most important attribute for fly fishermen. It does not help to know where the fish are hiding, if you can not present the fly to the fish through accurate casting.

There are three ways to learn how to cast with a fly fishing rod.

You can teach yourself to cast with a fly fishing rod. This requires a lot of training and you must make sure that you learn the proper techniques

If you have an acquaintance who is an accomplished fly fisherman, you can ask him for help to learn casting techniques for fly fishing.

For many fishermen the best option is to attend a course on fly fishing casting. This costs a bit, but you will get good guidance and qualified support.

Broadly speaking, there are basically two types of fly fishing. Wet fly fishing, when you are fishing the fly under the water surface. And dry fly fishing, when you are fishing the fly on top of the water. To engage in dry fly fishing below the surface, with a slow sinking fly, is known as nymph fishing.

The tried and true technique of wet fly fishing involves casting your fly line downstream and across the river. This technique is excellent to use for fly fishing beginners, since the fly fishing line is tight at all times. The fish will often hook itself, when taking a wet fly fished in this manner.

This method of fishing the wet fly is not difficult. Simply cast your fly downstream and across the river from you. Follow the fly downstream with your fly fishing rod, keeping the rod tip pointed at the wet fly. The current of the river will quickly form a belly in the fly line, swinging the fly across the river. This will make the fly imitate a swimming insect. Once the fly is directly downstream from your position, it is time to repeat the procedure.

I recommend all beginners to start their career as a fly fisherman, by trying out wet fly fishing. This is the easiest type of fly fishing, and it is a great way to gather experience.

The author has been involved in sports fishing for more than twenty years. He runs the website Fishing - Fishing tackle.
